Korean Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation gives first 6 year accreditation among College of Medicines in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Recognition of its excellence such as 100% pass rate in the 78th Korean Medical Licensing Examination [Feb 5, 2014] YU (President Noh, Seok Kyun) became the first in the region to receive '6 year accreditation' in the '2013 Evaluation and Accreditation for Medical Education' by the Korean Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation (KIMEE). KIMEE evaluates 6 areas in Korean medical education institutes such as college operation system, basic medical education curriculum, students, professors, facilities & equipment, and post-graduate education to give 4 or 6 year accreditation. The 2013 evaluation and accreditation for medical education was carried out through self-evaluation research reports of 6 universities subject to evaluation (YU College of Medicine, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Kosin University College of Medicine, Ajou University School of Medicine, Kangwon National University School of Medicine, and Konkuk University School of Medicine) beginning with the '2013 Evaluation and Accreditation for Medical Education Seminar' held on February 21 of last year, followed up with written evaluations for student reports and on-site visit evaluations. The final evaluation results were reviewed by the accreditation committee made up of 13 representatives from the government, social organizations, parents of students, and the medical field and were confirmed on January 24. In result, it was found that the YU College of Medicine operated appropriate education curriculum and made efforts to fulfill the social responsibilities of the universities, and that it more than satisfied the standards of the evaluation accreditation standards of KIMEE. Thus, it received the longest period of accreditation of 6 years. This is the first time for a College of Medicine in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region to receive '6 year accreditation'. In addition to the YU College of Medicine, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Kosin University College of Medicine and Ajou University School of Medicine also received 6 year accreditation, while Kangwon National University and Konkuk University School of Medicine received 4 year accreditation. Meanwhile, YU College of Medicine recorded a 100% pass rate in the 78th Korean Medical Licensing Examination announced last month, and is thus recognized for its superior medical education.

3rd place when including 4-year national and public universities - POSTECH, Kyungpook National University, Yeungnam University YU invests 11,600,100 won per Student [Feb 4, 2014] It was found that YU (President Noh, Seok Kyun) invested the most amount of money in education per student in the 2012 school year among 4-year private universities in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region. When including all 4-year universities such as national and public universities, YU came in 3rd following POSTECH and Kyungpook National University. The education cost per student is the total education fee compared to the number of enrolled students and it represents the amount invested by the university for students. It is commonly mistaken as tuition paid by students/parents and is easy to be confused by education consumers. In 2012, YU invested 11,600,100 won in education expenses for a student. This is the third highest among four-year universities in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region following POSTECH (90,087,200 won, first in nation) and Kyungpook National University (11,904,000 won). Following the top three are Handong Global University (11,522,400 won), Andong National University (10,605,300 won), Keimyung University (10,554,500 won), Kumoh National Institute of Technology (10,080,100 won), Kyungil University (10,033,800 won) Daegu Haany University (9,920,900 won), the Catholic University of Daegu (9,834,100 won), and etc. Meanwhile, the education cost per student is estimated based on the previous year's data on final accounts in August of every year. The 2013 education cost per student is estimated based on the data of 2012 school year's data on final accounts announced by the Higher Education in Korea(http://www.academyinfo.go.kr/). In the case of main/branch school system schools with campuses in provincial areas, the accounting of the main and branch schools are integrated to estimate the education expense per student by adding the main/branch schools.

YU, Yonsei University and Inha University joint research team develops the technology for the formation of polymer brush nano thin films Expected to be used for various electronic devices from process simplification, cost reduction and quality improvement [Feb 3, 2014] A domestic university joint research team turned on the green light for commercialization of flexible monitors and folding smartphones. YU Professor Kim, Se Hyun of the Department of Nano, Medical and Polymer Materials (left on photo), Yonsei University Professor Im, Seong Il of the Department of Physics, and Inha University Professor Yang, Hoi Chang of the Department of Nano-Systems Engineering joined up to develop the 'technology for the formation of the polymer brush nano thin film' that can greatly reduce the operating voltage of organic thin film transistors, which are next-generation electronic devices. This technology, which simplifies the existing complicated process and equipment and cuts down the cost, is expected to contribute greatly to the industry's development by being used in various devices such as flexible displays including smartphones that can be folded and unfolded and tablet PCs that can be rolled up like paper, as well as Wearable Bio sensors, RFID (radio-frequency identification tags), and smart cards. In order to commercialize organic thin film transistors, it is necessary to secure technologies for the implementation of low voltage operated electronic device that can operate with regular batteries (1.5V). However, low voltage implementation technologies developed until now have limitations in commercialization due to problems such as high process expenses and integrity between devices. Accordingly, the research team utilized widely used organic semiconductor materials to confirm the self-assembly, crystallization, thin-film-formation mechanism on top of insulation layer surfaces and developed a polymer brush nano thin film formation technology that can radically cut down on process costs, while enhancing product integrity. YU Professor Kim, Se Hyun (35) who participated in the joint research said, "By developing the organic-inorganic hybrid insulation layer where low power operation is possible and the technology for the formation of the polymer brush nano film that can optimize the interface between semiconductor and insulation layer with organic thin film transistor technologies that can achieve the operation within 1.5V in low capacitance insulation layers, we opened new possibilities that can radically reduce the operating voltage of next-generation soft electronic devices. The organic electronic device that applied this new technologies by the research team is expected to take an important position in the next-generation flexible display market that is expected to grow to a global market worth 42 billion dollars by 2020 through high flexibility and various uses. This study was carried out by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning's global frontier project [Center for Advanced Soft Electronics (director Cho, Kil Won)]. The research result was published as the cover thesis on the latest version (Vol. 26, Issue 2, January 15, 2014) of the world-renowned academic journal in the materials science sector, <Advanced Materials> (impact factor (IF) 14.829).

Expected to provide important information for developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, breast cancer and lung cancer Published in the world's top journal in the biophysics sector <Acta Crystallographica> [Jan 15, 2014] The research team of Professor Park, Hyun Ho (40) of the YU School of Biotechnology is receiving attention from academic circles by providing the cornerstone for developing breast cancer treatment. They revealed the trimeric structures of the 'TRAF4' proteins, which is known to cause breast and lung cancer. TRAF proteins act as a medium for sending cellular signals in the regulation of inflammation response. There are seven TRAF proteins from TRAF1 to TRAF7. It has been reported that when it operates abnormally in the inflammatory reaction adjustment process, it can cause various illnesses such as a variety of cancers, immunologic abnormalities, allergies, atherosclerosis, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, obesity, etc. It is known that TRAF4 proteins play an important role in the fetal neurogenesis process. It has recently been reported that when there is an over expression of TRAF4 in the inflammatory reaction adjustment process, it can cause breast cancer and lung cancer, and thus the importance of TRAF4 proteins are being examined with interest by cancer and immunity researchers. At this point, Professor Park's research team became the first in the world to reveal the trimeric structure of the TRAF4 protein, turning on a green light for developing the breast cancer and lung cancer treatments. Professor Park, Hyun Ho, who led this research, said, "Still a lot of follow-up research is needed for the commercialization of the actual treatment," and added, "For this, multiple peptides that inhibit signal transduction to prevent the over expression of TRAF4 proteins in inflammatory reactions were made, and animal tests are currently being carried out to check if these peptides have treatment effects for not only breast and lung cancer, but also other neurodegenerative diseases." The research results were carried in the January 2014 issue of the <Acta Crystallographica Section D: Biological Crystallography>, the world's top academic journal on biophysics with an impact factor (IF) of 14.1. Professor Park who led the research placed his name as the corresponding author, while the primary author was Yoon, Jong Hwan (27, 4th term in master's degree course). In addition, the research results were also introduced in 'People brightening Korea' provided by the 'Biological Research Information Center (BRIC)'.

YU Executive Vice President Choi, Oe Chool visits World Bank President Kim, Yong Agreed on collaborative efforts for international development cooperation programs to eradicate global poverty [Jan 14, 2014] <Executive Vice President Choi, Oe Chool (left) and World Bank President Kim, Yong shakes hands pledging cooperation for the globalization of the Saemaul Undong> The World Bank Group (President Kim, Yong) pledged cooperation with YU (President Noh, Seok Kyun), which is leading the globalization of the Saemaul Undong. Thus, YU will gain further momentum in its international development cooperation programs to eradicate global poverty as the global cooperation leading university. On the 9th, YU Executive Vice President Choi, Oe Chool visited the headquarters of the World Bank located in Washington, DC . He met with Kim, Yong, the first Asian president of the World Bank to introduce YU's efforts for globalizing the Saemaul Undong and to request the positive cooperation and support. While meeting with President Kim, Executive Vice President Choi explained, "The reason why YU established the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul is to foster human resources to overcome poverty and help social development in emerging countries, as efforts to return the contributions Korea received from the international society in the past 60 years". He also introduced the rural development projects based on the Saemaul Undong that is being pursued in several countries in Asia and Africa together with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC), and suggested the promotion of joint pilot projects with the World Bank. In response to this, World Bank President Kim, Yong said, "I think that the reason behind the success of the Saemaul Undong in Korea was because of the social, political and economical support in the 60s and 70s." He added, "When I visited Ethiopia, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia said that Korea's Saemaul Undong is a role model that they must learn for their national development. Taking this into account, the World Bank is also studying the strengths of the Korean education with the Korean government," as he spoke highly of the efforts of YU and pledged close cooperation. President Kim stated with emphasis, "The full-hearted efforts and cooperation of the Korean government are also necessary for the globalization of the Saemaul Undong and international development cooperation programs to help emerging countries overcome poverty." He also proposed, "Let's search ways for the Korean government, KOICA and YU to participate in education and pilot projects being pursued by the World Bank to develop rural areas of emerging countries such as in Africa. For this, we will invite YU to the World Bank Forum scheduled for February 2015." Currently in 2014, public officials, university professors, researchers, NGO leaders and journalists from 44 different countries are in a master's degree program in fields such as Saemaul Undong Theory and Practice, International Development Cooperation, Forest Resources and Ecological Restoration, and Public Policy and Leadership at the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul. These students are given 100% scholarships and a monthly allowance of 1 million won.

'YU Tech-Biz Meeting' held at the Chunma Arts Center on the 9th Joined by over 50 middle-sized company CEOs Technology Exhibitions/Presentations and Technology/Patent Consulting booths [Jan 8, 2014] YU (President Noh, Seok Kyun) is rolling up its sleeves for the commercialization of excellent technologies possessed by the university. YU will host the 'YU Tech-Biz Meeting' together with the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea at the Chunma Arts Center from 1 P.M. to 7 P.M. on the 9th. YU will concentrate on technologies in the 4 specialized fields of the Daegu Special R&D Zone (Smart IT, Mechatronics, Medical devices/materials and Green Energy) and hold the technology presentations and commercialization consulting for companies. Over 50 companies including representative local companies such as Heesung Electronics, Daesung Hi-Tech, Tyco Electronics Amp, and Ohsung Electronics will join the event. At this event, the excellent technology transfers and technology commercialization cases of the YU Center for LINC (director Lee, Hee Young) will be presented, while exhibiting the outstanding technologies of YU, hold 2014 LINC project presentations and corporate meetings, and the technology and patent consulting booths for participating companies will be operated by the YU Technology Licensing & Business Center (director Choi, In Ho). There will be 34 technologies on exhibit including Professor Jang, Ja Soon's (Department of Electronic Engineering) 'Car Lane Detection Method and Device' and Professor Kim, Chong Gun's (Department of Computer Engineering) 'Chair with standing-up aid'. Also scheduled are research presentations such as 'Safety Earphone System and Method for constructing thereof' by Professor Choi, Kwon Hue (Department of Information and Communication Engineering), 'Metal nanowire produced by using microwave and metal nanowire produced therefrom' by Professor Kim, Hae Kyoung (School of Materials Science and Engineering), and 'Night-time vehicle detection and positioning system and method using multi-exposure single camera' by Professor Jung, Ho Youl (Department of Information and Communication Engineering). YU Center for LINC Director Lee, Hee Young (56, School of Materials Science and Engineering) who prepared for this event said, "This is truly creative economy as it establishes a basis for the excellent technologies possessed by the university to result in actual commercialization," while adding, "This will be an opportunity for industry-academic technology exchange where the outstanding technologies of the university are introduced to companies." Meanwhile, a technology transfer signing ceremony for the 'Method for producing aluminum nitride powder' by Professor Jung, Woo Sik (59) of the YU School of Chemical Engineering, which received support from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning's 'Research Achievement Commercialization Support Project', will also be carried out. The company receiving the technology transfer is LCT (CEO Choi, Ho Sung), a company that manufactures fine chemical products. YU will receive a 300 million won technology transfer free and receive a 1~1.5% (worth about 20 billion won) portion of the annual sales by applying this technology until 2031.

26th Overseas Volunteer Corps dispatched to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam Continue to expand the financial support from YU for backpacking, language courses [Jan 2, 2014] YU (President Noh, Seok Kyun) will provide 260 students with global experience opportunities during winter break. YU dispatched volunteer corps overseas a total of 25 times since 2001. YU will send 60 students in the 26th overseas volunteer corps during this winter break to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Park, Chul-Hyung (24, junior, School of Mechanical Engineering) who will participate in the volunteer activities in Laos for two weeks from the 8th said, "I volunteer regularly at facilities for the disabled, but I am excited about this as it is my first time going overseas for volunteer activities," and added, "As I am representing the students of YU, a global cooperation leading university, I will participate with sincerity to raise the reputation of Korea and YU." Another overseas dispatch program supported by YU is 'Window to the World'. 'Window to the World' is a backpacking program following the theme related to the university. As round-trip airfare is provided by YU, it is highly popular with a competition rate of 4 to 1. Since first starting in 2002, about 1,650 students traveled the world up until last summer break. In this winter break, 92 students will team up in groups of 2 to 3 and go backpacking all around the world including Europe, USA, Australia, Japan and China for 2 to 3 weeks. 'OPP' (Outbound Pilot Program) is another overseas dispatch program funded by YU. A 10 week focus English training session is given to students in their freshmen and sophomore years who are interested in studying abroad and then given the chance to study English abroad during vacation. They are thus able to prepare in advance for exchange student programs that they can apply for after their junior year. OPP, which started in 2009, has been joined by over 980 students, and in this winter break, 58 students will be sent to the Philippines for 4 weeks through the OPP. In addition, 50 students will also be sent overseas through the short-term language programs, and thus, a total of 260 YU students will travel around the world this winter break. YU President Noh, Seok Kyun said, "Having a global mindset is a quality that all world citizens must have," and added, "University support will continue so that more students are given the opportunity to experience the world."

Recognized for contributions to develop the basic research projects and promote basic studies [Dec 31, 2013] College of Medicine Professor Kim, Jae Ryong (53, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, photo) received the Minister's Award from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP, Minister Choi, Mun Kee). He was awarded for his contributions to the development of the basic research projects and basic science research. While serving as the chairperson of the MRC (Medical Research Centers) Council since January 2013, Professor Kim contributed to the promotion of national basic medical science research and the development of the research. From June 2013, he worked on finding various issues and presenting solutions for the promotion of basic research with the launching of the new administration and the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning as a member of the National Science & Technology Council. Professor Kim earned his bachelor's, master's and doctorate's at YU and has been serving as a professor at the YU College of Medicine since 1993. He has been serving as the director of the Aging-associated Vascular Disease Research Center since 2005. In 2005, he received the academic award from the Daegu Medical Association, and in 2008, he was selected by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for the 'Top 100 National R&D Programs 2007'.

YU 'Department of Information and Communication Engineering, Department of Mobile Image & Motion Graphic Design, School of Music' Team The Excellent Award at the '11th Embedded SW Contest' hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Developed high-quality 'Augmented Reality App' by utilizing their majors [Dec 18, 2013] YU student team won the excellent award at the '11th Embedded Software Contest' hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, demonstrating the power of convergence. The team included seniors in the Department of Information and Communication Engineering, Choi, Byeong-Il (25), Lee, Seung-Joon (24), Hahm, Hyung-Seok (24) and sophomores in the Department of Information and Communication Engineering, Kim, Gi-Tae (23) and Park, Yoon-Ki (22), and juniors in the Department of Mobile Image & Motion Graphic Design, Park, Da-Jeung (21) and Byun, Jeong-In (21), and a freshman in the School of Music, Cho, Hwan-Hee (21). Their team name is 'Beau. Korea'. By breaking down the walls between these seemingly irrelevant majors, they joined forces in the nation's only contest to discover and nurture the embedded software specialists, and took the greatest honors. This contest, which is co-hosted by the Korea Embedded Software and System Industry Association, National IT Industry Promotion Agency, and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, was first announced on April 26 to which 2,566 people applied for. After 8 months of related education and technical support, the finals were held on November 19. A demonstration and presentation competition were held at the finals. In result, YU's 'Beau. Korea' won first place in the 'Smart Challenge Qualcomm Korea' sector, and they were awarded at the awards ceremony held at the Sangam-dong Nurikkumsquare in Seoul on the 5th. The 'Beau. Korea' team took on the 'Application and Program Development related to Augmented Reality' project. 'Augmented Reality' refers to showing virtual objects on top of the actual world that users see. By layering 3D images on actual images that the user is looking at, this technology brings down the distinction between the actual environment and virtual screen. The best known augmented reality technology is that which shows information on a screen such as store location and phone numbers by facing a smart phone camera in the vicinity. The title of their project work submitted was 'Bullet Mark'. They combined the paintball played in the real world with the FPS (First-Person Shooter) game played online. 'FPS game' is a type of shooting game where players engage in a weapon-based combat in a first-person view. The program that they developed is a mobile game where a smart phone is mounted on an actual model gun and virtual objectives are placed on the actual images seen by the smart phone camera, so that players can play the game looking at their smart phone screens while pulling the trigger. The success factor of the 'Beau. Korea' team was that students with various majors utilized their skills to enhance the quality of their project work. The engineering student was in charge of producing the actual model gun and developing the mobile application, while the design students configured highly perfected ideas through mobile image designs, and the music student composed own background music to heighten the tension of the game. Team leader Choi, Byeong-Il said, "When we were coming up with ideas, we started with just 5 students in the Department of Information and Communication Engineering. However, we felt the need to improve the sound and design in order to enhance the quality of the idea implementation, so we sought students from other departments. Sharing various ideas created a high synergy effect. I would like to thank the YU Center for Business Establishment Education who stepped in to make this combined team." Byun, Jeong-In, who majors in Mobile Image & Motion Graphic Design said, "I have tried simple app designs a lot in the past. However, brainstorming with students from other majors, coming up with ideas, and making actual mobile images was a great experience". Cho, Hwan-Hee, who majors in music composition said, "I usually work with classical music. However, I was able to enjoy a new experience by taking part in this IT software contest," and added, "Through this award, I found a new academic field that I never thought of in the past."
