“Water is the future of humanity” Discussion and lecture on global campus construction cooperation to foster water experts [September 2, 2011] Andras Szöllösi-Nagy (62, photo), chair of UNESCO-IHE, which is an institute for water and environment education under the UN, visited Yeungnam University on the 2nd. This is noteworthy under situations where Daegu and Gyeongbuk is fervently bidding for the ‘2015 World Water Forum’. UNESCO-IHE (International Institute for Infrastructural Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering) is an educational institute specializing in water and environment under the UN, which is at the center of global water issues in the 21st century. This is the only institute under the UN that can grant degrees and in order to share the technologies and experiences of the ‘Delta Plan’ by the Netherlands, it was established in Delft in 1957 and then transferred over to UNESCO in 2002. So why did the head of UNESCO-IHE, which has such great international status, visit Yeungnam University? Szöllösi-Nagy, visited Yeungnam University upon the invitation by Lee, Soon-tak, chair professor of Yeungnam University, chairperson of the pan-government organ, UNESCO-IHP (International Hydrological Programme) inter-government committee and chairperson of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Water Forum, and met Lee, Hyo-soo, president of Yeungnam University. Szöllösi-Nagy said, “Water is the common property of humanity and so the knowhow for managing water must also be shared by all humanity. Water is the future of humanity.” Emphasizing this, he explained plans to construct a global campus that is currently being pursued by UNESCO-IHE. He explained the function of UNESCO-IHE saying, “Currently about 95% of the 600 students are from developing nations from Asia, Africa and Latin America. After receiving specialized education on water resource development and management, they are returning to their nations and playing pivotal roles in the water industry.” He also added, “The importance of water management will grow in the future due to climate change and global warming. About 70% of global health issues are caused by water and about 50% of patients in sickbeds carry diseases caused by water. Thus, there is a need to construct the UNESCO IHE-Global Campus in every continent in order to foster more water experts.” Yeungnam University president Lee, Hyo-soo stated, “Our university has been pursuing the Green Innovation (GIFT) plan since 2009 and water is a field that we place a great deal of interest in. Since there are many experts on water including Professor Lee, Soon-tak, if we become a partner of the global campus of UNESCO-IHE, we will be able to help each other considerably.” Szöllösi-Nagy replied in agreement to discuss cooperation plans in the future saying, “The water issue cannot be resolved from a simply engineering approach. It is an issue that requires scientific, environmental technologies, and a sociological approach, and therefore, we need a partner like Yeungnam University that has high capacities in all academic fields.” Meanwhile, Szöllösi-Nagy made a lecture titled ‘Lesson from Wrong Predictions – Value Effect of Hydrological Forecasting Model’. He explained the evaluations of existing techniques and the value of hydrological forecasting models, saying, “There is no unique prediction model. There is no ‘best‘ prediction model. A backup system is always needed.” He also emphasized the importance of experience saying, “You should never completely trust a model. Models are excellent tools for making decisions, but the person who executes the model should always be factored in during the prediction process.”

“I hope to contribute in the early commercialization of nuclear fusion generation.” Top of the ‘1st Power Engineering School Summer Camp’ hosted by KEPCO E&C and full scholarship for one year [September 1, 2011] Park, Hyeon-je (24, junior in the Department of Electrical Engineering) who is bi-majoring in Nuclear Engineering, ranked first in the ‘Power Engineering School Summer Camp’ that was held for the first time this year by KEPCO E&C (CEO An, Seung-kyoo). Park will be receiving one-year full scholarship as a reward. The ‘Power Engineering School’ is a program hosted by KEPCO E&C in order to foster future engineers in the power technology sector. It was held at Yongin from July 18 to July 23 with the attendance of 48 engineering students from 25 universities including Yeungnam University, Seoul National University, KAIST, and POSTECH. The participating students completed an educational course that lasted for six days made up of lectures in ten fields such as design of Nuclear power plants and Thermal power stations, as well as on-site visits to the Samcheonpo Thermal power Station and Gori Nuclear Power plant. After comprehensive evaluations including tests, presentations, debates, and attendance, Park received 96 points, outscoring the second place by more than 10 points. The scholarship was handed over to Park at the Yeungnam University Mechanical Engineering Building on the 23rd. At this event, Jin, Tae-eun, director of the KEPCO E&C Human Resources Development and Education Center, said, “The knowledge and practical skills of Park, Hyeon-je, who is double majoring in Nuclear engineering and Electrical engineering is surprising,” while adding, “This education session that utilized the advanced technologies of KEPCO E&C will contribute in training the capacities of students, while also determining the students’ career path after graduation.” He also stated, “We are planning to continue to host this camp in order to contribute in fostering human resources for power technologies such as advanced cultivation of nuclear power personnel, which is being pursued by the government following the winning of bids for the UAE nuclear power plants.” Park, who ranked first, said, “I began double majoring in Nuclear Engineering since March of last year. I think this is why I was able to rank first. It was worth sleeping less and studying more.” He also added, “Because there are still too few nuclear power experts in Korea, double majoring in Nuclear engineering will provide me with more employment opportunities and two degrees. In addition, I will be given more specialized education and scholarship benefits.” Park, who explained that he wanted to become an expert in both nuclear power generation and power transmission, said with a smile, “My dream is to contribute in the early commercialization of nuclear fusion generation in the nuclear power sector.” Scholarship ceremony (from left to right, Professor Lee, Su-jong and Director Jin, Tae-eun of the KEPCO E&C Human Resources Development and Education Center, Park, Hyeon-je, Professor Chai, Young-suck dean of the College of Engineering and Professor Hong, Sung-yull of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Yeungnam University) Meanwhile, Yeungnam University newly established the Nuclear Engineering major from the first semester of 2011. This is to respond to the rapidly growing demands for the best brains related to nuclear power due to the increased demand for alternative energies to prevent global warming, the government’s plans to increase investments in the nuclear power industry, and the finalization of exports of nuclear power plants to the UAE. Therefore, with the School of Mechanical Engineering (Major of Mechanical System Engineering, Major of Mechanical Design Engineering, and Major of Mechanical Advanced Engineering) being the main department, the school is operating fusion and integrated double major programs participated jointly by the Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Electronic Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, and the School of Chemical Engineering. Students must take over 35 credits in double major curricula and at least 16 credits in core major courses to strengthen expertise. Students that complete the double majors will be given two diplomas, one being their main major and engineering diplomas in the Nuclear Engineering major.

The School of Architecture team, receives first prize in the ‘NYTC New York Theater City’ international architecture contest Competing with about 300 university teams of the world including England and Spain, demonstrated the potential of 5 year School of Architecture [August 9, 2011] The School of Architecture team of Yeungnam University was recognized for its ability internationally by placing the honorary 1st place at the ‘NYTC New York Theater City’ which was held targeting the students of Architecture throughout the world in Spain. ‘NYTC New York Theater City’ is the project name of the international architecture contest sponsored by Archmedium of Spain during the first half of this year and the students were given a mission to form a space where fresh and diverse performance can freely sprout at the Broadway of Manhattan which is the heart of world's performance culture industry. It was from the object of returning the Broadway as a city of culture where art and freedom are alive by reviving the experimental challenge of spirit from the 1980's after it has degenerated into a commercial business zone as the place became dominated by large scale performance culture where huge capital is invested. A total of 302 works have been released from all over the world in the contest held from January 15th to May 31st. The jury of five world famous architects have selected award winners based on publicness, harmony with surrounding environment, innovation with critical spirit of challenge, communication ability and novelty. As a result, the work of ‘PH4 Studio’ team (see photo) organized by Park, Jung-Ha/Park, Jun-Young/Kwon, Su-Hwan in fifth grade, Park, Chang-Beom in fourth grade and Han, Chang-Seok in third grade of Yeungnam University's School of Architecture called “What kind of performance do you want?" had received 'first prize' which is the first place. They also got hold of 2,500 euros in prize money (about 4 million won). The work was designed to naturally lead the footsteps of walking along the High Line Park to the performance hall as the place was made to open up a diversity of experimental performances by having the outer line of roof at the ring shaped building to give strong impression like colosseum of Rome meet at the edge of the High Line Park which is a new noted feature of New York and placing a small sized theater at the basement of gigantic round plaza formed at the inner building. High Line Park is a tourist attraction of New York that has revived the abandoned elevated railroad and was one of the surrounding environmental structures that must be considered in this mission. The jury has pointed out the fact that the work of these students has made the refined beauty of a city called New York stand out with a simple but impressive design, the fact that dead spaces between elevated railroad supports were illustrated to be recycled as a space of creative culture and the fact that urban integration was clearly shown with persuasive ability through round design, etc especially stand out. The second place went to the University of Westminster of England and third place went to the ETSAB team of Spain. Concerning this outstanding achievement, the team leader Park, Jong-Ha (25, fifth grade of Architecture) has expressed his aspirations by saying “I'm very delighted to have our ability recognized in the contest sponsored by Spain which is the home of architecture that has produced Gaudi” and “I want to contribute in telling people about the Korean beauty of architecture to the world by becoming an architect who has received international certificate in the future". The youngest team member Han, Chang-Seok (24) also expressed his determination by saying “It was a great fortune to work with talented mentors who had received several awards in international contests” and “I'll make effort to have more great results by sharing what I learned from mentors this time with my classmates or younger students” Meanwhile, Yeungnam University's School of Architecture has reorganized as five year School of Architecture since 2002 to be operating international architect certification training approved by WTO system while proving its potentials through many domestic and foreign contests. Thesis citation score similar to Yale University, higher than Stanford University QS assessment within rank 150 in the world, contending for 1st place in Korea with Seoul National University Professor Park, Ju-Hyun of Electronic Engineering who is 'expert of thesis', published about 290 theses including 170 SCI theses for the last 10 years [July 19, 2011] Recently, Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-Soo) has put up its name on the world's top 150 in the field of mathematics in the '2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities' announced by 'QS(Quacquarelli Symonds)'. The only domestic universities that have placed within rank 150 in the world are Yeungnam University and Seoul National University. KAIST was within rank 151~200. There is an assessment that such remarkable performance of Yeungnam University is due to the research performance of Professor Park, Ju-Hyun (44, Electronic Engineering, see photo). Since 2000, Professor Park had as many as 170 SCI theses (Science Citation Index) that people say it is difficult to write even 1 thesis per year. If we add up the domestic journals and the theses presented to domestic/foreign symposiums, the number reaches up to 290 theses. It was like writing 26 theses per year including 16 SCI theses. The domestic press media have also focused their attention to such remarkable research ability of Professor Park. <Chosun Ilbo> had put up an article of interviewing Professor Park at the top of paper with a title of "One 'Monster Professor' Upgrades the Mathematics of Yeungnam University to Yale University Standard" on the 'Social Issues' section (page 14) dated July 18th. Subsequently, the paper has put up a criticism called "We See the Hope of Korean Academic World from Him" with a title called 'Scholar and Thesis' also on the [Manmullsang](page 38) dated July 19th. According to the article, Yeungnam University has received a high score of 83.5 points in the 'citations per thesis' which is one of QS evaluation indices. This is similar to the worldly famous Yale University (85.5 points) and higher than Stanford University (74.2 points). Having many number of citations means that so many excellent theses have been written. The press was more interested in the secret of producing such outstanding performance by Professor Park. The article indirectly shows the secret of Professor Park through the evaluation of professors who work with him saying "he has great ability to concentrate", "he has extraordinary brain" or "he researches like a monster". The strict rule of Professor Park famous for researching by coming to school early next morning even after drinking heavily is not delaying the research work. People say he starts his day by reading the theses of scholars throughout the world uploaded on the internet overnight by coming to the lab 8 in the morning everyday even during the vacation. Professor Park was assigned to Yeungnam University for the first time in 2000 at the age of 33. His main area of research is control engineering. Among this field his area is not the applied field such as robots, but the Nonlinear Dynamics which is the field of basic theory. It is so called 'basic study' of finding patterns in complicated nature. Another secret is finding a different subject every 2~3 once he feels that he achieved certain level of performance in one subject. The reason why the theses wrote by Professor Park was widely cited and became famous was because he constantly developed the areas that no one else had dealt with. Professor Park has presented a total of about 290 theses including about 170 SCI theses since 2000. It was like presenting 26 theses per year. Because of this, Yeungnam University has recently put up its name in the world's top 150 in the field of mathematics in 'QS Academic Ranking of World Universities'. In 2008, he was appointed as the first Korean lifetime assistant chief editor of an SCI level international journal called 'Applied Mathematics and Computation'. Being in charge of as a chief editor deciding whether to publish theses is considered as greatest honor for scholars. 'Applied Mathematics and Computation' is an SCI level journal which totally includes the field of applied science (mathematics, engineering, physics and biology, etc) that can be interpreted based on applied mathematics while the editing team organization almost never changed after being founded in 1975 and famous for strict management of standards. And professor Park was appointed as lifetime assistant editor. The Elsevier Company of the United States publishing this journal has officially approved the research performance of Professor Park by expressing the fact that the reason for appointing Professor Park is because not only he has spread a vigorous writing activity in the field of Nonlinear Dynamics for the last 10 years, but also devotedly performed the role as a reviewer on the theses applied to be printed on the journal. In addition, Professor Park is in charge of thesis evaluation on about 50 SCI level journals such as participating as editorial staff of SCI level journal called 'Journal of The Franklin Institute' which is one of journals with longest history after being founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1826. Even in Korea, he is participating as editorial staff of 'control robot system society' and founding member/assistant chief editor of journal at 'IEMEK', etc. On such research performance of Professor Park, even other professors say that "he accomplished a very difficult thing". That is because the situation is that there is relatively great shortage of graduate school students in the universities of non metropolitan area compared to the leading university of Seoul with plenty of researchers from having many graduate school students. However, Professor Park said "The research of a scholar is same whether it might be in Seoul or in Daegu. The research is something which is done your own" and became humble by saying " It seems that I was somewhat neglecting the research from having a lot of foreign activities these days and I'm trying to catch a new subject of thesis by settling myself once again".

Participation of 41 teams, Successfully completes the 16th Baja Sae Korea on August 9th [July 9, 2011] The 'Baja Sae Korea' which Yeungnam University has opened up for the first time in 1996 with the purpose of raising creativity and spirit of challenge by engineers to apply the theory on the field was held for the 16th time this year. The festival of automotive engineering students which became a de facto international tournament by obtaining a certificate of United States SAE (Society of Automotive Engineering) in 2001 was started on July 6th and dropped the curtain of heated contest with the endurance race on the 9th. This contest where 41 teams participated has performed entrance of car shed on 6th, static inspection on 7th along with opening ceremony, Gyeongsan downtown car parade and dynamic inspection on 8th. Especially the ‘Rock Crawling’ attempted for 5th time this year had produced various things to see. While an elliptical shaped rock obstacle of 5m in width and 1.5m in height with course length of 10~15m is installed and the team that has passed through this within shortest period of time gets the highest score in order to test the transmission speed of engine power, there was an accident of all participants failing last year. This year, only 1 team has passed so that there is a criticism of 'difficult course' where safe passage itself is the key. On the 9th which was the last day, the ‘endurance race' which is the highlight of this tournament was held at the back hill of Yeungnam University filtration plant. In the middle of pouring rain started from early in the morning, the tournament continued as scheduled even in bad weather of pouring heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightening. As soon as the start flag of tournament chairman was raised at 10:50 AM, the muddy water started splashing from all over as the self made cars lined up to wait their turns started running by gushing out their loud engine sounds. The 35 cars were started in order to spread the race of 180 minutes with Cheoma DM (Car No. 9) that had placed first in the 'acceleration' category of Dynamic Test performed on the previous day at the front. The endurance race is a category in which the victory is determined depending on who turns most number of 4km off-road track within given time. The drivers of self made cars are having quite a bit of difficulty in securing their field of vision from the goggles mixed up with muddy water and sweat. Also, the suspension system of car and driving skill are more important than simple speed because the surface of unpaved track is slippery, has a lot of steep turns and is a mountain trail with severe unevenness. Needless to say that the car must have good power of engine in order to finish three hour's race by crossing 5 layered obstacles with steep slope here and there. If there are small and large accidents such as engine stopping, deviating from the track or slipping from the hill in the middle of race, the referees stop the race for a moment by waving a red flag and the volunteers must run in immediately to push the car off the track for the race to resume. Although the cars that broke down resume the race after getting repaired from the pit, they naturally get behind in the race because they lost that much time. Therefore, the driver and all team members rush in to fix the car in order to reduce the time remained in the pit. So it is the moment when teamwork and promptness are also very important. At 1:50 PM of this day, the heated contest for three days has dropped the curtain with the flag to finish the endurance race. The closing ceremony was held at the main stadium of Yeungnam University from 5 PM. As a result of adding up the scores from all categories including static inspection, dynamic inspection and endurance race, the honor of overall victory given to the team with highest score went to the No. 29 MIRACLE-Blue team of Hanbat University. To the winning team, the Minister of Knowledge Economy award, championship flag, trophy and prize of 3 million won were given. In addition, the No. 6 T.E.M11 team of Ulsan University that has placed second received the Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do award and prize of 2 million won and No.30 MIRACLE-Red team of Hanbat University that has placed third received President of Yeungnam University award and prize of 1 million won. The result of tournament will be announced throughout the world through official homepage of SAE (www.sae.org) and publications.
