All lectures and experiments are performed in English. The score evaluation through mid-term exam and final exam is also entirely according to the evaluation standard of UC Davis. In a word, the entire chemical materials engineering lecture hall of UC Davis is moved to Yeungnam University for one month. The career of professor who are in charge of lectures and experiment guidance is also worthy of attention. Professor Kim, Sang Tae (46) who will be handed down with the baton of Professor Shackelford is working as a professor of UC Davis since 2004 after receiving Ph. D from the Univ. of Houston and going through post-doc at Max Planck Institute of Germany, he is especially considered as one of great scholars in the field of nano material and fuel cells that are getting attention as next generation materials. He introduced by saying “there is great demand of students in other major trying to learn material science through vacations because this is the field that all engineering students must study. So the summer abroad system of UC Davis providing high quality education and oversea culture experience opportunity at the same time is a very popular program” and expressed his expectations by saying “I\'m very delighted to carry out this program with Yeungnam University which is getting attention in the research in the field of green energy and advanced technology materials. Through this opportunity, I hope the exchange between two universities would spread to the entire university as well as engineering\". Professors Lee, Jae-Hyung, Kwon, Hae-Wook, Lee, Jae-Yeol and Ko, Young-Gun in charge of experiment guidance one week at a time are also people with great ability who have received the latest degree or post-doc at Ohio State Univ., Case Western Reserve Univ., Univ. of Texas, Austin or MIT. Professors in charge of lectures and experiment guidance at UC Davis Summer Abroad 2011 (From left-Professors Lee, Jae-Hyung, Kim, Suk-Young, Han, Young-Hwan, Shackelford, Kim, Sang-Tae, Lee, Jae-Yeol) Field trips are also a part of program. while the students learn practical knowledge from practical workers by visiting the fields related to the major such as POSCO Power, POSCO, Hyudai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Motors, Millinet Solar, LG Electronics Solar Division (Kumi) and Daegutec, they will also have time to experience the history, tradition and culture of Korea by visiting, DMZ, Seoul, Jeonju, Andong and Gyeongju, etc. The determination and expectations of participating students are also extraordinary.
UN affiliated OPCW Inspector Kim, Seup alumnus (Department of Chemistry, 81), special lecture at his alma mater [June 29, 2011] “While Korea is about rank 10 in the share of expenses by UN members in 2010∼2011, the number of Korean people who have advanced to world\'s international organizations such as UN with tens of thousands of people is merely about 300. This is ridiculously little number compared to our country\'s contribution to UN. So I stand here today. I ask all of you to raise the status of Korean people by making advancement to international organizations such as UN.” At 10 AM of the 29th, At the Legal Building Room. 525 of Yeungnam University, a special lecture inviting Inspector Kim, Seup (50) of UN affiliated ‘Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons’(OPCW) (50) (see photo) started. Despite the sign of heat wave recording 27℃from the morning, about 80 students dreaming of getting into UN affiliated organizations or international organizations have filled the lecture hall. Inspector Kim invited as speaker is Class of 81 who entered Chemistry Department of Yeungnam University and Class 23 of ROTC. He is standing in front of his younger alumni as he lives a new life of an international public official at Hague, Netherlands where OPCW is located since 2005 after wrapping up the life of a military officer for about 20 years. His main duties are to perform inspection and investigation activities related to chemical weapons by going around about 180 OPCW member countries. He says the days spent abroad are as many as 200 per year from performing important duties as an inspection team manager. The reason why he went through the trouble of visiting Yeungnam University in his busy schedule was because there was something he really wanted to say to the younger students. He wanted to let them know that opportunities come for sure if you draw a bigger picture toward a greater world by escaping from the \'frog in a small pond\' mentality. “You never know what kind of international organization will appear all the sudden within international state of affairs getting changed each day. The OPCW which I\'m working for is also the one created all the sudden as a result of Strategic Arms Reduction Talks between United States and Soviet Union in 1997. So the new employment reaching up to about 500 people took place at the time and the many people who were working in the field of chemistry caught the opportunity of getting into an international organization. So you should also prepare for this. The opportunity will surely come someday even if it might be right now.” The method of getting into an international organization he had presented was more simple than expected. In case of UN for instance, they give employment announcement for 2 months through internet homepage and all you have to do is submit an application through e-mail by selecting the area of work which is appropriate for your major. However, it is necessary to well package your experience and motive for applying according to the qualifications required by each organization. In fact, you can become an employee of international organization if you pass the first interview over e-mail or phone and the final interview on the spot after submitting the documents. He emphasized that it is worth the challenge by saying \"just being selected as a interview candidate is a great fortune because most international organizations pay for the flight and lodging as well as the daily wage for the interview period during the interview on the spot\". The employment of international organizations is limited to the citizens of member states. But it is same as having no entrance barrier since our country has joined most international organizations. Also, you can always catch the opportunity when it comes if you manage your social experience well under a long-term plan because most international organizations require social experience after graduating university. However, he emphasizes that you must keep practicing foreign language skills at all times. “English is a must. All you have to do is keep studying the English you have been learning to prepare for employment at the university without stopping after getting a job. And to acquire a little more advantage, it would be nice to learn one of French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese or Arabic.” He said it is still disappointing that there isn\'t much interest in the provincial areas yet although the interest is getting greater among the university students of metropolitan area such as the international organization employment study getting active due to the fact that UN Secretary General Ban, Ki-Mun has set a record of succeeding in becoming a first Asian to serve consecutive terms in 45 years. He wrapped up the special lecture of this day by saying \"International organization do not have unreasonable discrimination against people from provincial universities and also do not have discrimination on race or nationality. The opportunity is open as much as you are prepared. Prepare little by little starting now. And the competition is naturally always fierce as the opportunity gets better. Make the challenge until you succeed without being afraid of failure. Although I also a bitter cup of coffee in 2003, I could make the opportunity that came as mine as a result of keep preparing without giving up\" and \"Make the challenge by looking at the farther, wider and greater world. I\'ll be looking forward to meeting one of you in the international stage after ten years\".

According to Yeungnam University on 22nd, the team of Professor Yoon, Hyung-Don of Biotechnology Department has developed a bio sensor to see the change of \'copper\' (Cu) content with your eyes by adopting unnatural amino acid ‘L-DOPA’ in Green Fluorescent Protein using genetic-code engineering. The thesis related to this was issued on June online edition of a famous international journal called 《Angewante Chemie》with impact factor as high as 11.8 in the field of chemistry. Copper is one of microelements playing an important role inside animals and plants. Especially, the deficiency of this causes anemia, bone disorder or nerve disorder, etc in human body and the intake must be limited in case of Wilson\'s disease. It also becomes a quite important index indicating the level of soil contamination. Therefore, while measuring the amount of copper contained inside the body or soil is very important for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases or improvement on soil contamination, a simple and prompt measurement is made possible through this research. Especially, the new technology of Professor Yoon\'s team is noteworthy from the fact that it has increased the utilization of Green Fluorescent Protein even more. Green Fluorescent Protein is widely used in measuring the revelation degree of genes in living cells, protein-protein interaction, structural change of protein and in measuring the location of protein, etc. It became a candidate for Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 due to such importance. But the research of Professor Yoon\'s team is primarily the bio sensor on a specific heavy metal called \'copper\' and the opened possibility of developing and utilizing as a bio sensor reacting to heavy metals other than copper. Professor Yoon, Hyung-Don (35) has expressed his expectation by saying “not only the research has illustrated a new methodology in the development of a bio sensor that can measure more promptly-accurately just with small amount of heavy metal content which is the main culprit of various diseases in modern people and environmental pollution, but it will also develop as a new technology of selectively extracting-removing only specific heavy metals in case of adopting the unnatural amino acid combining with other metals from its combining ability” Meanwhile, Yoon, Hyung-Don had completed bachelor\'s, master\'s and doctorate at the chemical engineering department of Seoul National University and currently working as a biotechnology professor of Yeungnam University since September, 2007 after going through post-doc at the biology department of MIT in the United States. So far, he has presented about 20 theses on SCI level journals such as 《Chemical Communications》 or 《Bioconjugate Chemistry》 and was recognized for the outstanding academic ability as he received the \'rookie academic award\' from the Korean Society of Biotechnology and Bioengineering at the end of last year. This research was performed for 2 years as Professor Ayyadurai (N. Ayyadurai, 33) from India researching and lecturing at the Biotechnology Department of Yeungnam University , Prabhu (N.S. Prabhu, 26) of doctorate program, Deepankumar (K. Deepankumar, 24), Professor Lee, Chang-Su of Chungnam National University and Professor Lee, Seon-Gu of Pusan National University have participated as joint researchers since 2009.

Ranked first in Korea in evaluation for leadership and expertise fostering for the \'Green Energy R&D\' with national funding worth 100 billion won [June 7, 2011] The government announced the \'Green Energy Strategy Roadmap 2011\' for fostering green energy on the 7th. They announced mid and long-term R&D guidelines in 15 main sectors in order to secure the future green energy market. A total of 26 trillion won will be invested to 2030 in 15 main green energy sectors including solar power, fuel cells, wind energy, green cars, and smart grids. The government\'s goal through this roadmap is to increase the current share of the global green energy market of 1.2% to 18% by 2030. In addition, it is planning to create 1.5 million new jobs. It is thus expected that the industry related to domestic green energy R&D will become busier and the demand for experts on green energy will also grow drastically. At such point, Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) is rising as a hub of South Korea for \'fostering experts and R&D in green energy\'. YU\'s \'Green\' specialization is finally coming into the limelight in research, education and globalization. Researchers of the LED-IT Fusion Technology Research Center are operating the integrating sphere. First, in the R&D sector, YU is pursuing green research amounting to 100 billion won in national funding. Results of industry-academic cooperative research with companies in the green energy sector such as solar cells and green cars are scheduled to launch multi-purpose electric vehicles priced in the 2 million won range later this year, and likewise, it is reaping great achievements in green energy R&D and commercialization. Green research of YU are being carried out on three main points. ▲ development of energy conservation technologies in existing industry sectors (LED-IT fusion Technology Research Center, green car parts project team) ▲ development and commercialization of new green energy technologies (solar cell RIC, Institute of Solar Energy, TUV Rheinland test center, ISET solar cell Korea mass production line) ▲ and diffusion of energy-conserving culture (small & medium business HRD Agency). In addition, the CRC (Convergence Research Center) was established in campus and the building that was first completed is being used as a center for \'green research\'. This is because due to the characteristic that new high technologies must be discovered, with fusion and integration among related majors and organizations. Through this, it is hoping that its \'Global Frontier 10-3-10\' goal to be in the world\'s top 10 in the 3 major fusion and integration research areas within the years will accelerate the green sector (GIFT Plan). The first building constructed in the YU CRC is where the green energy R&D and industry-academic cooperation-oriented research centers are gathered. YU stands out in \'green education\' as well. Recently, the YU Green Energy Education & Research Center placed first among the 21 centers nationwide in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology\'s (MEST) annual evaluation. Thus, YU was officially recognized as the best green education institute for two straight years. Just as last year, it will be receiving support from the national treasury as incentives. This center, which is fostering green experts with funding from the national government totalling 25 billion won for five years from 2009, is being participated by 92 professors and 1,403 students from four undergraduate organizations such as School of Chemical Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Major of Mechanical Advanced Engineering in School of Mechanical Engineering, and Department of Physics in the College of Sciences. In particular, an education system for majors in connection with the \'Major of Green Energy\' was constructed and programs for the three tracks of solar cells, hydrogen fuel cells, and energy systems are operated. At this evaluation, the excellence of the education system was officially recognized. Furthermore, it received top points for \'cooperation with companies and corporate support activities\' and \'activities in link with support for employment\' and it received high scores for industry-academic cooperation such as scoring max points in the index for the satisfaction and independence of participating students and businesses. In addition, the internship program for 30 graduates students who did not get jobs resulted in 23 of them being hired full time. Through this contest, I once again confirmed that what is Korean is global and I gained confidence.\" Yeungnam University Graduate School of Food Science, (3rd term in master\'s degree course, 37, male) Him and the rest of the Korean representatives won the bronze medal at the team contest in the Hong Kong International Cooking Contest (HKICC 2011) at the Hong Kong Convention Center lasting from the 11th to the 14th. 700 cooks from 15 countries particiapted in HKICC, which was held in connection with the 2011 Hong Kong Food Exposition (HOFEX 2011). These cooks selected to represent their respective countries faced off in live cooking, team cooking, and western cooking. The team challenge, called \'The Gourmet Team Challenge\' was given the mission to prepare a buffet for 30 guests. They were also required to make up the buffet with tapas, appetizers, soup, salad, main dish, and desserts. The participating teams were to prepare the ingredients and begin cooking at 5pm and complete everything up to table setting by 10am the next morning. The judges tasted the food afterwards, and then 30 guests who purchased tickets were given the opportunity to taste the dishes. The six member \'Korean StarChef\' Team made up of members who completed the Korean cuisine human resources fostering program sponsored by the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corp. were chosen to represent Korea. They are talented chefs who were qualified to represent Korea through a contest held by the Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corp., who invited judges from WACS (World Association for Chefs Societies). WACS is the only organization that oversees world cooking contests, and thus, receiving medals from WACS is equivalent to being globally certified. The Korean StarChef team decided to go with the \'most Korean, yet global\' Korean menu. For this, using pine trees discovered while looking for a Korean motif, storytelling techniques were added in the cooking. Titled \"Song-hak-rak-da\" meaning \'enjoying a cup of tea under a pine tree\', they prepared Korean ingredients to make menus including bibim (mixed vegetable with spicy sauce) noodle salad, gujeolpan (platter with nine tastes, and ma (a mountain herb) salad. Their strategy was effective. The judges said that \'They were dishes where we could feel the taste and charm of Korea\', and thus won the bronze medal following Macao and China. Lee, Eun-sang stated, \"While preparing for the contest for the past six months, we worked together with the goal of globalizing Korean food, and so we are very happy to win the bronze medal.\" He added, \"While watching the western judging process for food prepared in Korean style, I think I learned a bit on what kind of strategy to take on in international cooking contests such as the one to be held in Moscow in September. I hope that I can participate in more international competitions to become Korea\'s best chef, while also training students.\" Korean StarChef Team (fourth from left, Lee, Eun-sang) who won the bronze at the 2011 Hong Kong International Cooking Contest A spokesperson for the Agro-Fisheries Trade Corp. stated, \"This was an opportunity for Korean food coming one step closer to the tastes of the world, and is very significant in that it confirmed the possibilities of the globalization of Korean cooking.\"
